Murphy's Law-Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

I’ve been hearing a lot of sayings recently that people seems to use that have the word dog in them.  As a dog, (that’s me) I wanted to expand my edumacation so I put my nose to the grindstone; by the way don’t do that…. it hurts, and started searching for the meanings of these favorite people sayings.

Top Dog :  Now that one is really easy, that’s what O’Riley thinks he is!  When dogs are in packs it is the one dog who gives all the orders, the one who always wins the prize.  People admire that so they too wanna be Numero-Uno!

That Dog Won’t Hunt :  What it really means is a very lazy coon hound that don’t wanna work for his dinner!  But people have changed it’s meaning and you’ll usually see it in politics, most of the time referring to a faulty plan or a failed policy (but I’m not sure what that means).

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie :  Just go and wake up Riley after a hard night and you’ll find out for yourself!  Grouchy!  People learned a long time ago not to startle a sleeping dog cause it just means trouble, leave it alone.  Now they use it instead of saying “it’s better not to bring up an old subject”.

My Dawgs are Killing Me :  This is not one of my favrites, it’s not even spelled right; dogs are spelled D-O-G-S, not dawgs.  And me and the boys would never kill anyone, so go figure that it implies that your feet are really hurting you…..huh?  Far beyond my brain power to figure how people translated that one into what is means.  Gives me a headache!

Doggie Bag :  Now this is my most favrite, but chances are us pups ain’t gunna get what’s inside nowadays!   Linda was telling me that when she was little any left over food from a restaurant meal would be taken home in a bag referred to as a doggy bag.  The food (usually meat scraps) would be given to the pet.  Fast forward to today… people get these special little styro boxes, strip the restaurant table bare of anything possibly edible, and the remains of their meal is tomorrows lunch or dinner!  And the poor little pup isn’t gunna get one crummy measly morsel!  Sad, but true………

Dog Day Afternoon :  To me a dog day afternoon is laying in the sun, catching up on zzzzz’s, without being disturbed by people commands.  People have taken our meaning and changed it all around due to a movie of the same name.  It stared Al Pacino as a bank robber trying to get money for some purpose and of course his simple plan is attacked by Murphy’s Law (great name by the way), and of course he ends up with a very, very, bad day!  So now instead of a day of “AAHHHHSSSSS” it’s a day of “Oh, Crap”!

Three Dog Night :  Yes, there was a rock band by that name but what the saying refers to is perhaps shepherds tending flocks on cold winter nights, sleeping out doors and having their dogs sleep with them to stay warm.  A really cold night might take three dogs to keep from freezing.  Personally as far as I’m concerned two’s company, three’s a crowd!

You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks :  “Oh contraire”, as Jameson would say; he’s always teaching O’Riley a new thing or two!  Maybe back then when people were sitting around dreaming up all these sayings it actually went “you can’t teach an old hog new tricks” and it got lost in translation thru the years!

Every Dog Has Its Day :  My favorite!  This saying states the obvious, even the unluckiest and lowest of us will eventually have their glory.  Right-on, Right-on. They must of had me in mind when they coined this!

I get your drift on where you were going there. I often think of my past and use it as a means to analyze where I am and where I want to get to. Where I struggel is balancing it all out. How do you guys balance things out?

  6. Murphy says:

    Hey Tinn,
Thanks for your comment……but I just gotta know……when you use your anal eyes isn’t it hard to see where your heading if your only looking at where you’ve been? That would really throw me off balance! Hang in there!

Hey would you mind stating which blog platform you’re working with? I’m planning to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a difficult time making a decision between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique. P.S My apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!

    Hello there J.D.,
I see your in the UK, thanks for visiting! As for a platform I work with it’s a two tier step-up to get to the computer to pound out a story. I did talk with the Editioral Control Board and they said our layout is WordPress with Lifestyle Theme. I don’t know what that means, my layout is in front of the window on a sunny day with a sleeping theme……..hope this helps!
