Valentines Trivia – Murphy’s Top Ten Trifles

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner I put my trusty nose to work and sniffed out some trivial trifles about this sweetheart day.  (and when Riley wasn’t lookin I put my paws around a few sweet trifles for myself…..Chocolate are my favorites!)

In the middle Ages, people believed that the first unmarried person of the opposite sex you met on the morning of St. Valentine’s Day would become your spouse……. (Whew!  Glad we’re not living in the middle Ages…….it could get ugly!)

15% of U.S. women send themselves flowers on Valentine’s Day……… (Some guy is spending the night in the dog house!)

More than 35 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine’s Day….(That’s a lotta “heart-you”!)

In the United States, 64 percent of men do not make plans in advance for a romantic Valentine’s Day with their sweethearts…… (Us guys just like to wing it, it’s more adventurous!)

About 3% of pet owners will give Valentine’s Day gifts to their pets……  (Hope I’m in the 3% bracket!)

California produces 60 percent of American roses, but the  vast number sold on Valentine’s Day in the United States are imported, mostly from South America…….. (No wonder the economy sucks!)

In the 17th century a hopeful maiden ate a hard-boiled egg and pinned five bay leaves to her pillow before going to sleep on Valentine’s eve. It was believed this would make her dream of her future husband………  (No dreaming for me, I’d just get gas!)

February 14th was long associated with fertility and love even before St. Valentine lived. It was the day that birds traditionally chose their mates……. (I didn’t know St. Valentine was a bird?!)

Two out of every three couples turn their heads to the right when they kiss….. (Sounds more like a miss than a kiss!)

Eskimos, Polynesians and Malaysians rub noses instead of kissing …… (Dogs rub noses too cause you never know where the other dogs tongue has been…eeeewwww!)

Ribbons and frills are the Valentine’s Day symbols since the days of knighthood. It is said that maidens would give their beloveds kings or soldiers ribbons and frills just before the latter went to war. The men used to keep the ribbons and frills with them although they fought.

Hmmmmm! Nice bit of trivia! If I had pockets I would want ribbons and frills when I head into battle with O’Riley!
    Thanks for the info….

In my opinion, the very best Valentines Day gifts will always be a flower bouquet or perhaps candies or something a bit on the mushy side —

    Hey there Sean,
Good opinion and for me you can send me flowers, no candy or chocolate…..Riley got into Christmas Truffles and we all had to go to the Vets for a stomach pump out! It was really NASTY! Besides flowers make a room smell good. Reminds me of spring! (sigh)
